Position Overview

The Arnold Ventures’ Advocacy team strengthens the organization’s partnerships with federal and state governments and supports our policy teams’ efforts to bring research and evidence into the policymaking process. The Advocacy team is responsible for working with the organization’s policy and research teams to develop and execute legislative advocacy campaigns around our policy priorities; building, resourcing, and maintaining strategic alliances with engaged and influential state and national partners and stakeholders.

Arnold Ventures’ Criminal Justice team aims to advance community safety and the values of fairness, effectiveness, and racial justice. It funds innovative work in six domains: Policing, Pretrial Justice, Community Supervision, Prisons, Reintegration, and Fines & Fees. 

Reporting to the Director of Advocacy, Criminal Justice, and based in Arnold Ventures’ Washington, D.C. office, the Advocacy Manager, Criminal Justice will help develop and execute state and federal legislative advocacy strategies to advance Arnold Ventures criminal justice policy priorities. This position will build and manage criminal justice advocacy projects and partnerships at the state and national level with the goal of advancing Arnold Ventures’ criminal justice policy priorities through legislative advocacy campaigns. 

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Arnold Ventures’ criminal justice legislative advocacy strategies, in partnership with the Director of Advocacy, other key members of the advocacy team, and criminal justice policy and research teams
  • Build and manage relationships with bipartisan criminal justice advocacy stakeholders 
  • Develop and present grant recommendations that are aligned with the Advocacy team’s strategies, including reviewing proposals and advising applicants on scope and budget
  • Facilitate the award, management, and tracking of advocacy grants, which includes working with grantees and partners to develop strategic campaign plans, assist grantees in troubleshooting and overcoming project obstacles, and make strategic connections between partners to facilitate collaboration
  • Coordinate across Advocacy and Criminal Justice policy teams to ensure maximum synergy in accomplishing goals
  • Oversee and track multiple criminal justice legislative issue advocacy campaigns simultaneously across several states and at the federal level

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 4 – 6 years of experience in positions involving issue advocacy campaigns, public affairs, government relations or project management
  • Knowledge of state and federal legislative process 
  • Experience building and supporting issue advocacy campaigns or lobbying at the state and/​or federal level
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to summarize and communicate key takeaways to diverse, nontechnical audiences
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills
