Juliene James

Julie leads Arnold Ventures' corrections team, overseeing over $90 million invested in four strategic areas: community supervision, prisons, reintegration, and fees and fines. The team develops strategy and investments to shift probation and parole supervision from catching failure to promoting success, end mass incarceration while improving conditions for those who remain incarcerated, reduce barriers to successful reintegration, and eliminate fees and ensure fines are fair

She joined Arnold Ventures after serving as senior policy adviser for the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, where she oversaw state and local efforts to reduce solitary confinement and reform sentencing, corrections, community supervision, fines and fees, and pretrial policies and practices, among other projects.

Previously, Julie worked as a senior policy associate for the Vera Institute of Justice, providing assistance to state and local policymakers on criminal justice policy and implementation. Julie also practiced law at Wiggins, Childs, Pantazis, Fisher & Goldfarb, representing clients who experienced discrimination in employment and housing based on race, sex, and disability. In addition, she served as a judicial clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Julie earned a B.A. from Harvard College and a J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she served as editor-in-chief of the NYU Law Review.
